Koivu injury a bad break for Habs
Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau confirmed yesterday what many had suspected. Koivu, the team’s captain, has a fractured left foot. A small bone was broken after Koivu blocked a shot last Friday in Buffalo. He didn’t play in Toronto the following night, and left the Bell Centre yesterday on crutches, with his injured foot in a walking brace.
He’ll miss the remainder of the regular season. The Canadiens have three games left, beginning tonight at Ottawa (7:30 p.m., RDS, CJAD Radio-800). After that, it’s anyone’s guess. Montreal’s expected to get home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.
“He’s someone with a lot of experience,” Carbonneau said. “He’s our leader, he’s our captain and he’s played in big games internationally. We’ll definitely miss him. Hopefully, he’ll be able to play once the playoffs come.” Koivu will be joined on the sidelines by defenceman Francis Bouillon, who sustained a foot injury against the Maple Leafs after taking a shot off his right ankle. Bouillon was examined by a doctor yesterday, and definitely won’t play against the Senators.
