Flyers Making Room for Shanahan?

The Flyers recent trade for defenseman Matt Carle from the Tampa Bay Lightning was designed to solve a problem on the Flyers blue line.  But, it may potentially open the door for Brendan Shananhan.  The Flyers sent forward Steve Downie and defenseman Steve Eminger to Tampa in the exchange.  The move leaves the Flyers’ 50-man roster with an open spot.  It will remain difficult to sign Shanahan as the Flyers are still near the ceiling of the current $56.7 million salary cap.  Last week’s meeting between Shananhan and Holmgren was nothing more than an exploratory meeting.  Shanahan has stated he wants to stay close to his home in New York.

The Flyers definitely needed help on the blue line with Randy Jones and Ryan Parent still out for the foreseeable future, and a team 3.67 GAA, 27th in the league.  It seems, though, that the door has been left open to explore the possibility of adding Shanahan.  The Flyers don’t lack for offensive talent.  But Shanahan would bring a boost to the power play, a lot of experience, and a few Stanley Cups.

It may remain a far stretch, but, there’s always the possibility…
