Final Thoughts @ Toronto (11-29-08)
Maybe it was fatigue after having played six games in nine days. Maybe the Maple Leafs had extra jump after all of the buzz around the hiring of Brian Burke as the new GM. Whatever the reason, the Flyers fell to Toronto 4-2 on Saturday night. Their eleventh loss in fourteen regular season games against Toronto. It’s not that the Flyers played poorly. It was a very even game, statistically speaking. But when two teams play evenly matched, it is the team with the fewest mistakes that usually wins. The Flyers made more mistakes and the Maple Leafs Capitalized on them. The Flyers had their chances, but Vesa Toskala had the answers. The end result was the Flyers first regulation loss in ten games. So now, it’s time to regroup, rest, and try to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday when former Flyer Rick Tocchet brings his Tampa Bay Lightning to town.
Positives:
- Mike Richards had 2 goals and kept his team in the game.
- Penalty Killing continues to be outstanding
Negatives:
- Mistakes. The Flyers committed turnovers that directly led to two Toronto goals, and one mental mistake that led to another.
- Luca Sbisa’s play has slipped as of late, though I don’t think he should be paired with Andrew Alberts.
Notes:
In the last ten games, the Flyers have collected 16 of a possible 20 points * How good is the Flyers PK? Over the last eleven games, the Flyers have allowed 3 power play goals. But, they have scored 4 * The Flyers finish the month of November 7-4-2. However three of the four losses were at the beginning of the month * Jeff Carter entered tonight as the league leader in goals.
- Mike Tursi
