Final Thoughts vs. Islanders (12-9-08)

Another day, another close game by the Flyers.  The wins keep coming as the Flyers continue their climb to the top of the Atlantic Division.  What is impressive is the amount of wins in close games.  This team does not appear to be phased by much.  After erasing a two goal deficit and taking a 3-2 lead into the second intermission, the Flyers overcame a fluke goal by the Islanders to walk away with a 4-3 win and a share of second place with the Penguins.  This time it was Simon Gagne playing the role of hero, as he netted his first game winning goal of the season on a power play midway through the third period.  The Flyers continue to play solid hockey and have found their scoring touch during 5 on 5 play.  The New York Rangers are now only four points ahead of the Flyers, who have four games in hand.  Next up is another game against Carolina on Thursday night.

 Postives:

  • “Energy Line” of Cote; Asham; Powe was maybe the best line of the night.  They drew penalties, had great forechecking, and got the Flyers first goal of the night.
  • The Captain again rose to the occasion when needed.  He assisted on both the game tying and game winning goals
  • Jeff Carter continues to be red hot.  He scored again tonight by doing all the little things.

Negatives:

  • Marty Biron let in a soft goal to tie the game in the third, and left some huge rebounds.
  • The Flyers had stretches where they didn’t seem to have their heads totally in the game.

Notes:

Jeff Carter is again tied with Thomas Vanek for the League lead in goals (20) * The Flyers are 14-4-3 (31points) since starting the season 0-3-3 (3 points) * The Flyers last four games have been decided by one goal.  They are 3-0-1 in those games * Matt Carle continues to be sidelined with an undisclosed injury.

Another positive to consider… Ask someone to name the top 5 two way forwards in this league. If Gagne and Richards aren’t on that list I don’t who should be! The two of the are a force out there, and when Briere comes back healthy, look out!
