Sundin down to two teams by early next week – Chicago out
via Calgary Herald:
Five teams remain in the hunt for free-agent centre Mats Sundin, although the Swedish star’s agent says that number should be pared down to just two by early next week.
“We hope to come to a final decision some time next week if we can,” J. P. Barry said Friday. “He is definitely going to make a decision before Christmas, but if we can we are going to try and make it next week.”
The Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers remain in the hunt for Sundin, who is spending this weekend in New York as part of a Poker Stars promotional appearance. Barry said Sundin will attend the Rangers’ game tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes and the pair will meet with New York GM Glen Sather.
It is now clear that unless the Hawks can free up some cap room quickly that they are not in a position to sign Sundin.
via Daily Herald:
“We don’t have any cap space,” Tallon said. “We’d have to move (a player). There are very few teams that have that space for the amount of salary he wants.
“I think he likes our team. They approached us and talked to us and, of course, we had to look at it, but something has to happen to clear up that kind of money.”
For the Hawks to sign Sundin, they would likely need to trade either Nikolai Khabibulin ($6.75 million cap hit) or Martin Havlat ($6 million).
The Rangers are in a similar position to the Hawks with a lack of cap room for Sundin due to Redden and Rozsival.
via New York Post:
It is about money, or the lack thereof that the Rangers have under the cap with which to woo Sundin. Because they appear to have invested so poorly this summer in committing a combined $11.5M per on long-term contracts to Wade Redden and Michal Rozsival that might have made sub-prime lenders think twice.
Sundin to be a Canuck a sure thing?
