Luongo opts out of All Star Game

Luongo, voted the Western Conference started, has opted out of the All-Star game in Atlanta.  While there will be at least 263,211 disappointed fans, and probably a few more in Atlanta, Luongo’s decision is understandable.  His wife, Gina, is pregnant and due in April.  She has flown back to Florida, where her extended family resides, in order to have someone to take care of her while Luongo is on the road.  What was described as “minor complications” have arisen in her pregnancy and so Luongo has chosen to use the break to spend some time with her.

From Luongo’s statement on Canucks.com:

“I struggled with this decision, “ said Luongo. “But I think family right now is more important to me and this is a good opportunity for me to spend some time with my wife and the baby.”

Luongo will also miss the first game back from the break, a home game against the Dallas Stars.  He will meet up with the Canucks the next game in Tampa Bay.  This will mark the first occasion since Roberto Luongo was traded to the Canucks that he will not be starting at GM Place.  The four games that Luongo missed following the shootout loss to Pittsburgh were all on the road.  Fans who have purchased tickets to the Dallas game are bound to be disappointed, and as a result we may see a handful become available at lower than normal prices in the next little while.
