Jonathan Roy, son of Patrick Roy fighting
Lastnight between Chicoutimi and Quebec there was a line brawl where Patrick Roy allegidly yelled at his son, Jonathan Roy (The goalie for Quebec) to go to the other end and fight Chicoutimi’s goalie. At the time of the fight the score was 7-1 for Chicoutimi. Here is the video. What type of suspension is this worth?
UPDATE:
via TSN:
Roy coaches his son Jonathan on the Remparts and denies he encouraged the slugfest near the end of the second period in Saturday night’s 10-1 thrashing from the Sagueneens.
“We will take the time to look at all the elements of this incident, all the reports from the two supervisors who were there, the officials and the images that are available,” QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau told all-news channel LCN on Sunday.

A year, anything less is a slap to the face of all other junior hockey players who play for the love of the game.

Translation :
“it’s 7 to 1 in 2nd period for the Sagnéens (White and Blue team) when frustration takes the Remparts (Red team). All the player on the ice are involved in a fight, Jonathan Roy, who came as the backup to Desfossés (the other goalie in the red team) would really like to partcipate to the brawl but he’s held up by the referee. Roy finally escapes the attention of the official and savagely attacks Bobby Nadeau (The white team goalie).
The Chicoutimi goalie protects imself as best as he can against Roy’s hits. Once his fight is over, Patrick Roy’s son gives the growd both fingers. Sébastien Rheault does not appreciate this behaviour and decides to try and correct him. As there is only 27 seconds left to play in the second period, the referee decides to send both teams to their dressing rooms to calm them.”

Like father like son!
are you kidding me! i saw this on sportsdesk last night and could not believe what i saw. What kind of family is this?
I would love to see this goon (both father and son actually) get huge suspensions.
Hey, in the heat of the moment a fight breaks out, that maybe considered hockey. But, this goon had to skate across the ice (and it was obvious there was encouragement from his father).
Even when Johathan arrived, the other goalie (Bobby) was still in his net (obviously not wanting any part).
I watched his father’s fights when he was in the NHL, and saw how much of a goon he was (not to mention that he lost every fight).
This stuff has no place in hockey! never mind a suspension…how about charging Jonathan…let’s protect the other goalie.
This family needs some obvious help! (I still remember patrick crying when he was a member of the Habs…glad he left)
Does it sound like i’m upset? you bet!
I’m expecting a child soon, and boy or girl, i would hate them to be part of anything like what i saw.
i hope the suspension/charge is big…i am also a teacher/coach and would love to say to my athletes: there you go, if you do something like that you will be punished…or kicked out of the league..
i know i would kick the player off the team if they did something even close to what johathan did
Get the Roys out of hockey!

I have seen ugliness and been in some brawls that made CBC national news but never have i seen a coach more deserving of a suspension. Patrick Roy is a complete disgrace to the game. Lest we forget the off ice unethical way he got esposito. BUt last night – That is worth a full year suspension for the dad and 10 games for the son

so your suggesting a bigger suspension for the coach than the player in this case john? thats an interesting point of view.

It is interesting, if Jonathon was not the son of Patrick Roy this probably would not be getting the media attention that he getting.
However I think we can all agree that it was pretty stupid move on Jonathon part to go and attacked the opposition goalie on the encouragement of the coach (his father) and after seeing the video maybe the police should be looking at laying assault charges against the young Roy.
Someone asked why the coach should receive a bigger suspension than the player, well if any other coach had order or encouraged his players to attack another player they would no doubt receive some sort of suspension.

I absolutely stand by the longer suspension for the coach. I never played much Major Junior A. I dont think my 48 hours in Granby in 1982 tryout camps qulaifies when the frnech guys ran my little skinny white ass running out of town. However I played, coached, reffed and was an exec in a very good tier II junior league. Caoches are responsible for their players even if they didnt instruct then and they get big suspensions. Patrick should be banned from Hockey – END OF CONVERSATION – he is an embarrasement to the sport at every level – He disgusts me

Jonathan Roy deserves a long suspension for this and next seasons. That will give a lesson to all kids on ice. It was disgusting.

Patrick deserves a huge suspension if not ban for telling his player (son no less) to fight like this. A coach is supposed to control his team and when he actually leads the LACK of control, it goes against all coaching ethics.
He should get a long suspension or banned, but I doubt hell get either.

Young Roy is a thug, just like his father. His father had some talent which made people tend to forgive him, as if talent was an excuse. Jonathan is just a second string goalie with a temper. His apology was a joke and he clearly doesn’t realize how stupid he looks. Charge him, suspend him for a full season, and send a clear message to the other ‘Roys’ out there.

that video was sickening. No other words to describe it.
Fighting may be a part of hockey, but there is an unwritten code of conduct even to that aspect, as repulsive as it is. This, in my opinion, is right up there with McSorley and bertuzzi, if not worse. Atleast in those cases, McSorley and Bertuzzi can claim (to whatever degree) that their strikes came out of a misguided moment where they lost control, whereas, in roy’s case, he was stopped by the ref, and had all the time to regain his composure (if indeed it was in the heat of the moment), but returned to commit the most cowardly act on ice that I have witnessed in my 25 plus years of being a hockey fan.
Lets see Don Cherry put a spin on this one!

are you kidding…as bad as mcsorley and bertuzzi…what about when the bruins jump the boards and fought, or when rob ray beat on that fan at the bench…remember 72 summit series….when eagleson was coming across the ice, giving the finger…along with many players….or the two-hander bobby clarke gave that russian in that series….but they call that series the greatest moment in canadian hockey history….if you wanna see a game with no fighting…watch chess…whats with the other goalie…dont you see the line brawl…put your hands up…god

Jonathon is obviously a thug and should be kicked out of the league for the remainder of the season. An assault charge might be warranted.
His Dad, Patrick (if it can be found that he encouraged his son), should be fined by the league. Two rotten peas-in-a-pod.

The Roy incident was one of most disgusting things I have ever seen on ice. It was premeditated assault not a hockey fight. We wonder why hockey is regarded like pro wrestling or roller derby and not a real sport in the USA.
Being a Canucks fan I witnessed the effects of Bertuzzi’s boneheaded attack on Moore which basically changed the momentum and zeitgeist of a promising team to one on a downward spiral which continues to this day.
Mindless violence destroys the morale of the team,of the fans and ultimately of the entire sport.
Mario.

JC… minny fans suck? lets see, sold out every game since day one in the year 2000? there is a reason St. Paul is officially known now as Hockeytown! Our “goons” as you call them aren’t goons at all. Wild players don’t get suspended cuz they don’t play cheap… They enforce, which is their job…like on EVERY other hockey team. I enjoy how you keep saying that fighting is a part of hockey but you call the best fighter in the NHL a goon, get your story straight

ok, mnwild….lets count championships…cause thats what determines success….ummm, thats what i thought…none. wild game are so damn boring to watch. thats why they has so many goons, they need to wake up the fans with a fight. with the Roy kid, all I’m sayin is that as long as hockey has fighting, things are gonna happen, its the heat of the moment, its not right to hang a kid for that. and dont tell me that hockey isnt loving the publicity that this is getting.
JC Said,
March 26, 2008 @ 10:55 am
its funny how all these american sports writers are. your top athletes are cheat with all the drugs but everyone is so quick to forgive that, but you all wanna hang this kid out to dry for a damn fight…i thought you guys were for attacking people with their hands down.
